Overview

Formal commands are used with people you would address with usted or ustedes. These commands are formed using the present tense yo form.

  • for ar verbs, drop the o ending and add e or en

    examples:
    yo estudio --> ¡Estudie usted! - ¡Estudien ustedes!

  • for er and ir verbs, drop the o ending and add a or an

    examples:
    yo leo --> ¡Lea usted! - ¡Lean ustedes!
    Lea en voz alta la línea más pequeña de letras que puede ver.
    Read aloud the smallest line you can see.

    yo escribo --> ¡Escriba usted! - ¡Escriban ustedes!

    Escriba texto en este campo.
    Write text in this field.

    Note! Stem changing verbs and verbs with irregular yo forms are formed in the same way.

    examples:
    yo cierro --> ¡Cierre la ventana!
    Cierre su boca, por favor.
    Close your mouth, please.

    yo sigo --> ¡Siga Ud. todo derecho!

    Siga las instrucciones exactamente.
    Follow the instructions exactly.
