Step 1

The present tense of haber is irregular. It is hay and it is used to express existence. In English hay means “there is” or “there are.”

Hay poco crimen.
    There is little (low) crime.

Mañana hay un examen en la clase de español.
    Tomorrow there is a test for Spanish class.

¿Hay corbatas más baratas?
    Are there cheaper ties?

En mi familia hay 6 personas.
    In my family there are six people.

Hay sólo tres carros.
    There are only three cars.

¿Hay mucha sangre?
     Is there a lot of blood?
